CONCOR Technicrete’s Concor Florawall earth terrace retaining system proved an unusually attractive solution to a problem facing developers of the Blue Haze Twin City shopping mall development in Hazyview, Mpumalanga. The problem: how to engineer a support structure for a taxi rank to be constructed at the top of a steep slope adjacent to the mall.

After cutting into the sloping ground, and with only limited space to work in, a 6m high retaining wall was built and back-filled, using more than 33 000 of the curved and fluted Florawall retaining blocks.

An additional problem – ground water behind the retaining wall – was solved using a sub-soil drainage system.

The use of the Concor Florawall garden blocks - with their earth-retaining provision for planting flowers and greenery - enabled landscapers to mask what could have been the sterile and over-powering effect of a high concrete wall and turn it into a living “vertical garden”.
