THE gravity-based engineered-in qualities of Technicrete’s Concor Enviro-Wall as a river-bank protection system were employed with great effect in the construction of a retaining wall for a new riverside home near the Free State town of Bothaville. The lower foundations of the wall had to be sunk into the water at the river-edge, posing a particularly challenging assignment for the contractor, Toris Paving

Compounding the problem, there no space for mechanical equipment in the construction of the multi-terraced wall. Wheelbarrows, shovels and bare hands had to be used to transport and install the 6 100 Concor Enviro-Wall blocks used in the building of attractively stepped terraces, which have varying heights of between 2m and 5m.

The contractor made maximum use of the versatility of the Concor Enviro-wall pre-cast blocks, which can be reversed to produce varied visual effects – a smooth or textured face – as well as to create gaps to allow the growth of vegetation.

However, structural stability was a key essential, and this was achieved due to the engineering design quality of the blocks.
