Technicrete Paving and Kerbs for Moletjie Road Upgrade in Polokwane

Mid-2015 Limpopo’s Public Works and Infrastructure Department announced that R1.2 billion had been earmarked for road refurbishment and maintenance to be rolled out over the next three years. Included in this roll-out was maintenance to a section of the Moletjie Road Project in Polokwane that was to be upgraded from gravel to paving. Technicrete’s Bond Brick and kerbs were selected for this project.

Makapani Modipa, CEO of MacP Construction said “There was no established pavement on this section of Moletjie Road, it was a gravel walkway that needed to be upgraded to a paved surface. Included along this stretch of walkway a 1.3 km bus stop had to be accommodated in the construction.”

“We chose the Technicrete Bond Brick and kerb products due to their durability, this was a key factor for the bus stop development in particular, due to the weight and regularity of the bus traffic. The good pricing and Technicrete’s reputation for reliable servicing made them a natural choice for the Moletjie Road project “said Modipa.

“The project consisted of a combination of 50mm Bond Bricks together with Fig 8B Kerbs, 60mm and 80mm Double Zig Zag Grey pavers and Fig 3`s Kerbs”.

“The Bond Brick is a traditional paver that offers economy and durability and is very well suited for commercial and domestic surfaces. It has been a preferred choice not only with local municipalities, but by private commercial developments as well” said Hendrik Steenkamp, Sales Consultant for Technicrete ISG in Polokwane.

“Our pre-cast concrete kerbs are an ideal edge restraint in the construction of roads, kerb and gutter systems. We also can now offer our Figure C900 mountable kerb which can be utilised in traffic calming measures.”

“We were pleased to have joined forces on this R2 million project with MacP Construction. Where heavy traffic is experienced, our Bond Brick paving blocks are perfect because of their well established reputation for longevity and quality while still offering a really good finish aesthetically. We aim to ensure that all stock is supplied as per client requirements, and this was the case on the Moletjie Road Project” concluded Steenkamp.

The vast ranges of technologies and products, specifically suited for infrastructure maintenance and development, are the core offering from Technicrete ISG, and its sister companies Rocla and Ocon Brick.

Cost-effective sustainable Jeep Track

Technicrete’s interlocking Armorflex Blocks are ideally suited to Jeep Track (Strip Road) application, providing access to areas currently either without established roadways or with crumbling insitu cast concrete strips.

Sites requiring vehicle traversal such as rural development and construction areas, agricultural and farm roads, tourism establishments, areas of bush, tree or high grass growth, gravel roads, earth tracks and in particular, locations where roads and embankments are subject to stormwater erosion, would benefit greatly from the installation of Armorflex.

Technicrete’s Armorflex all-weather, non-slip Jeep Track solution is cost effective for property owners and developers who require vehicle access where roads may or have already become eroded by weather. The specialised design of the blocks, with earth filled gaps and varying height concrete areas, ensures greater traction for vehicles, particularly in mountainous environs and/or wet conditions. The ability to wire tie the blocks together into long mats and anchor these into the natural soil further assists in stabilisation of the blocks and road surface.

Placement in Jeep Track orientation is cost effective due to a material saving by only paving 2 strips of approx 600mm wide (each) as opposed to paving the entire road width.

Traditionally, gravel roads or earth tracks require costly regular maintenance, such as grading. Insitu concrete surfaces start cracking up very soon after installation and degrade very quickly with large chunks of concrete spalling and breaking off. These type installations generally require regular repeated applications that become too costly to maintain.

Technicrete’s Jeep Track allows for vegetation growth through the blocks (if required) and easy maintenance of this. A correctly designed and installed Armorflex Jeep Track project will offer a closure solution with minimal maintenance requirements that will not crack, break, shift or become unusable for vehicular access. Armorflex Jeep Track roads can be designed to accommodate low to high intensity traffic and a variety of loading from cars to heavy trucks.

Technicrete Enviro-Wall Solution

Technicrete’s Enviro-Wall is a cost-effective and simple gravity retaining wall system that is suitable for earth embankments, bridge abutments, cut slopes, landscaping of cut and fill areas around buildings, a protection for steep channels and river banks as well as culvert inlets and outlets.

Constructed from dry stacked interlocking, precast blocks, the simplicity of the Enviro-Wall design enables the blocks to be easily and quickly laid to form an effective retaining wall system. Opening or closing the spacing between the blocks means that the Enviro-Wall structure configuration can be altered so that in the open arrangement cavities between adjacent blocks can be filled with soil, enabling the moisture in these spaces to promote rapid plant growth. It can also be installed as a solid engineering structure.

Differing visual effects can be achieved by a reversal of the block which gives a smoother or textured face or a combination of the two.

Due to the extensive mechanical lock, as a result of the profile shape, between blocks in the Vertical plane, Enviro-Wall is the preferred option for walls requiring reinforcement in the form of horizontal Geogrids.

Suitable for supporting a wide range of embankment heights, the wall is able to accommodate both concave and convex alignments down to a small radius of curvature and the Enviro-Wall can accommodate moderate ground settlement. With the custom designed Base Block, the angle of the inclination of the wall can easily be set at 700 , but can be varied should site conditions require different angles.

The Enviro-Wall blocks are available in 275 mm x 300 mm standard sizes with a block mass of approximately 23kg.

An Elegant finish at Broadlands Residential Estate Polokwane

Polokwane , October 2016

A key criteria in the ever burgeoning residential estate market is an elegant and presentable finish to developments. With property owners paying top prices for estate exclusivity and security, they expect to reside in a property that matches their investment. Technicrete’s Keystone paving has been the choice for many residential estates countrywide due to its superior finish, and was recently installed at five private residences at the Broadlands Residential Estate in Polokwane, not far from the Mall of the North retail complex.

Jan Booysen, Owner of Boema Paving based in Polokwane said “Technicrete ISG’s Keystone paving was chosen for the five Broadlands residences due to its unique and distinctive styling which combines two distinctive shapes into one unit. The Keystone paving range blocks are not only elegant, but offer a maintenance free surface, making it an economical and practical choice. At one of the residences the large area needing to be paved had to complement the colouring and style of the main house and its associated out-buildings. We believe that the Keystone has achieved this and the final appearance is outstanding.”

“Technicrete’s Keystone paving was chosen for its durability, appearance and because it conformed to SABS standards. I cannot fault the service we received from Technicrete ISG, for example, one pallet of the autumn coloured paving was slightly ‘out-of-shade’ with the other supplies when we applied them. Technicrete ISG immediately replaced this supply with a pallet of autumn bricks that matched up perfectly” said Booysen.

“The Keystone paver is suitable for domestic driveways, pedestrian walkways, petrol forecourts, industrial and factory roads, municipal parking areas, commercial developments as well as suburban streets. It is a good looking product that has been installed in many residential estates because of its final appearance” commented Hendrik Steenkamp, Sales Representative for Technicrete ISG in Polokwane.

“Of course, the key to achieving this elegance is in how the paving is installed. Boemo Paving, who did the installations at Broadlands Residential Estate, has a good and qualified paving crew applying the autumn coloured 60 mm paving over an area covering 1,700 m2 “ Steenkamp said.

CIVTEK chooses Technicrete Products

Building aesthetics coupled with the need to conserve energy and natural resources are factors that play an ever increasing role in the development of commercial buildings. The selection of products needed to achieve these elements is therefore paramount to the success of the final appearance of any project.

In order to meet the parking and landscaping aesthetic requirements, Civtek (PTY) Ltd, civil engineering contractors, chose Technicrete ISG pavers, kerbs and retaining wall products for City Logistics’ new warehouse based in Benoni, Gauteng. “Technicrete’s price, reliability and proven track record with Civtek made them a natural partner for us on this project” said Raymond Metcalfe, Contracts Manager at Civtek (PTY) Ltd.

“The new warehouse facility for City Logistics comprised 10,750 m2 of paved parking and roadways, and Technicrete’s 80 mm DZZ grey interlocking pavers were chosen for their suitability for heavy duty-areas because of their hard wearing surface overlay that is the best option for a logistics facility” said Metcalfe.

“Technicrete’s Figure 7 Semi mountable kerbstones were installed in driveways and parking areas that covered 450 meters. While 6,210 Florawall units were applied behind the kerbs so that seedlings could be planted in over 550 m2 to enhance the landscaping aspects of the project.”

“ The City Logistics warehousing project also comprised a Retention Dam, and after taking technical advice from the Technicrete ISG’s sales representative, Wayne Oliver, our engineer selected their Earthform retaining wall blocks to support  the 150 m2  surrounding the dam whilst still giving a pleasing finish and an easy maintenance offering” concluded Metcalfe.

“Our Florawall units give uninhibited root and water penetration, which is needed for true plantability success. It is a good looking and practical product that will enhance the visuality of any retaining application. It can be stacked up to six layers high providing the grounding is suitable and no additional loads are applied” said Wayne Oliver from Technicrete ISG.

Oliver continued “Our DZZ interlocking pavers and our range of kerbing are known for their longevity when applied in projects that require a surface to withstand a heavy and high traffic flow such as industrial and commercial properties are subjected to”.

Technicrete ISG is an iconic South African brand which is well known for its paving, kerbs, roof tiles, erosion protection blocks, precast products, prebagged concrete and retaining wall products. Technicrete Kerbs and Pavers chosen for Modderfontein Private Hospital

SONY DSC

In June 2015 the construction of the new 200 bed Modderfontein Private Hospital began. This new development estimated at a cost of R 200 million will included a sports clinic and a 100 bed sub-acute facility with a parking area suitable to accommodate the vast number of visitors and emergency vehicles expected at the hospital. Technicrete ISG was contracted to supply the precast concrete kerbs and interlocking pavers for the project by Rhino Civils.

“While price was a pressing consideration when sourcing kerbing and pavers for the Modderfontein Private Hospital, it was not the only one. Service and especially reliable delivery are other key elements that we consider before choosing a supplier for projects we are subcontracting to” said Grant Oberem, Contract’s Director for Rhino Civils.

“Technicrete met all of our required criteria; in addition, their products offered a very high quality and aesthetically pleasing finish, which is important to the surrounds of a healthcare facility. We at Rhino Civils have earthworks, kerb laying and paving teams with 15-20 years of experience between them. The fact that our kerb and paving teams can install between 100 m of kerbing and approximately 800 – 1000mof paving per day makes the partnership one of natural synergy: the superior Technicrete products installed professionally by the Rhino Civils team resulting in an outstanding finish” said Oberem.

Z S Coetzee, Technicrete ISG’s Sales Manager for Gauteng added “Rhino Civils sourced Figure 3 barrier kerbs and Figure 7 semi mountable kerbs in addition to Double Zig Zag (DZZ) 60 mm and 80 mm grey pavers. The fact that Rhino Civils has experienced installation teams to work with our products ensures that the installation is successfully implemented and that an outstanding finish will be achieved”.

“Our products speak for themselves. They have been chosen for many major projects over the years and are highly regarded within the industry and end-users for their durability and quality. The kerbs can be used as edge restraints in the construction of roads, kerbs and gutter systems while the DZZ interlocking pavers form a continuous and hard wearing surface that is ideally suited for commercial parking areas as well as heavy-duty industrial areas, roadways and depots, making the DZZ extremely application versatile” said Coetzee.

The Modderfontein Private Hospital project was completed in April 2016.

Polokwane motor dealership paved by Technicrete

The durability and finished appearance of forecourt paving for petrol stations is a key factor for petrol suppliers in creating an aesthetically pleasing environment for refueling and convenience shopping to their motor vehicle customers. Contractors for the Caltex garage project in Marshall Street, Polokwane, Legoya Development, chose Technicrete kerbing, Double Zig Zag (DZZ) paving as well as BondBrick pavers for this project.

The Technicrete BondBrick is suitable for the paving of petrol station forecourts, industrial and factory roads and municipal parking areas, and offers developers an economic and durable option. The Technicrete DZZ interlocking pavers form a hard wearing overlay surface which have proved their longevity at many high volume vehicle or foot traffic outlets. Not only suited to petrol station forecourts, they have been successfully installed at shopping malls, road extensions, industrial and commercial business parks, as well as local governmental infrastructure upgrades such as pedestrian walkways in Polokwane. The paving has also been installed in sectional title complexes where it has been found to be a more affordable and longer lasting option to re-tarring driveways.
